£IOO DISTRIBUTED AMONG TRAWLER’S CREW
SHIPWRECK SOCIETY'S GIFT
To recompense the crew of the wrecked trawler Thomas Bryan for the loss of their belongings, the sum of £IOO in orders upon city firms was distributed among the men this morning. The money came from the Shipwreck Relief Society, a little-known organisation with a head office in Duiedin, and was administered by the local agent, Captain T. Atwood, superintendent of marine. Captain Atwood said that within the last, four months he has now distributed £IBO to seamen who have been wrecked. The £BO went in relief work among fishermen who lost their craft and the crews of small boats. The sum of £ 400 was paid out after the Wiltshire wreck. The society, which relies for its funds on voluntary subscription, is poorly supported in Auckland and each year it seems that about ten times as much money is paid out in the city as ccmes in from subscribers.
