EMPIRE
CHARLIE IN “THE CIRCUS” Charlie Chaplin’s latest comedy, “The Circus,” is now being shown at the Empire Theatre. Once again Charlie Chaplin makes his appearance as the Tramp, that pathetic, politic and imperturbable personality. Lown and out, the Tramp seeks solace in the frivols of the fair. Any entertainment which costs him nothing is of particular interest, to him. An embarrassed pickpocket uses him as a receptacle for a stolen wallet, and the fun begins. Chaplin’s arrest in the gallery of mirrors is a scream, but the deliciously absurd pose of his among the marionettes is even better. The police chase drives the Tramp to the circus, which is doing a box-office freeze. A sleepy audience wakes up at his appearance and the circus proprietor sees a potential goldmine in him.
An exciting and pathetic story of the life of a boxer, entitled “The Count of Ten,” is also being shown, starring Charles Ray.
