MUNICIPAL BAND
TOWN HALL CONCERT Beethoven’s splendid march from “Fidelio” began last evening’s municipal concert, which was one of the? most successful held in Auckland. The Municipal Band, under Mr. Christopher Smith, provided the greater part of the programme, but Madame Irene Ainsley sang several contralto solos charmingly, her numbers being “Nobil Signor” (Meyerbeer) and “O Mio Fernando” (Donizetti). Miss Mary Hamilton was a capable accompaniste. The band earned great applause bjr its spirited playing of Rossini’s overture to “William Tell,” and then expressed the melody Qf “Salut L’Armour” (Elgar). From “Faust” (Berlioz) the band played the “Ballet des Sylphes” delightfully. For his own march “Viva Auckland,” Mr. Christopher Smith was given warm applause. The last numbers were ‘Dedication” and “Benediction” from Meyerbeer’s ‘Les Hugenots.”
Contributions by members of the band included the cornet solo, “Sovra il Sen” (Bellini), by Mr. Fred Bowes and the flute solo, “Song Without Words” (Clinton), by Mr. Hal C. McLennan.
