CHEMISTS’ HOURS

TO OPEN ON SUNDAYS ALL AUCKLAND DISTRICTS By Government sanction, the hours of chemists in the Auckland City and combined districts have been extended to allow shops to open from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. on Sundays. This is the result of a largely signed requisition which was presented to the authorities several weeks ago., seeking hours extension. There has been a long-standing controversy among chemists on the question of hours, and some time ago a suggestion was made that a clear week-end from Saturday evening at 9 o’clock till Monday morning be closed hours. This was countered by a requisition seeking Sunday hours, and circulated by Mr. H. Gregory, proprietor of Havid Teed, Newmarket, and Mr. T. W. Irwin, Ponsonby, who secured the signatures of 54 of the 98 chemists in the districts affected. The contention of the petitioners was that the close week-end was not in the public interest, and did not allow free trading facilities. The new hours, which are to operate on and after Sunday next, June 17, cover the following districts: Auckland City, the boroughs of Birkenhead, Hevonport, Mount Albert, Mount Eden, Newmarket, Northcote, Onehunga and Takapuna, and the town districts of Ellerslie, Glen Eden, New Lynn and Henderson.
