PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION
Sir, — I note by your telegraphed message from Christchurch that that city has resolved to revert to the proportional representation electoral system. Tire “Irish Truth” stated recently: “It must be said for proportional representation that it creates accurate results, that it eliminates or tends almost- entirely to eliminate feuds and faction fights, and that it contributes in a very marked degree to the political education of the electorate.” The State of Tasmania has again elected its assemably by the system, and has given the body commanding the majority of votes the Government benches, while also giving the minority a fair proportion of representation. It is the only fair system known, and it should not be too much to expect that the Auckland City Council may bring it into use for its next election of councillors. That the present system has proved a failure is admitted by the bulk of our population, and it is to be hoped that those misguided advocates of the ward system may give the question consideration and advocate proportional representation as We must have a change, so let it be the best, not a “half-pie” system. J. JOLLEY THOMAS.
