WITH THE BOY SCOUTS
The Papakura Troop of Boy Scouts held its second annual birthday and parents’ evening last Friday in the Paragon Theatre, before a good audience. The chairman, Mr. James Beams, J.P., in his opening remarks, congratulated the troop on reaching another milestone in its life and wished them, on behalf of those present, many happy returns, the audience heartily endorsing the chairman’s remarks. Mr. Beams gave a hearty welcome to all the visiting Scouts and Guides, the District. Scoutmaster, Mr. A. Brothe.rton, the District Girl Guide Commissioner, Mrs. Brotherton, and all who had assisted in the birthday celebrations. The large audience spoke well for the townspeople’s appreciation of scouting in Papakura, said the chairman. Mr. Beams apologised for the absence of the District Scout Commissioner, Mr. Grigsby, who was unable to attend. D.S.M. B.rotherton presented a warrant as assistant-scout-master to Troop-Leader C. Kernot. An excellent and highly-instructive programme was submitted by the troop, this including an opening chorus, “Welcome to One and All,” bridgebuilding, community singing, sea chanties and a camp fire sing-song. During the evening the following badges were presented: Stars (second year); Assistant-Scoutmaster C. Kernot. Troop-Leader C. Francis, PatrolLeaders R. Francis, J. Fraser, I. Earl, R. Martin, O. Muir, Seconds J. Derbyshire, J. Goddard, R. Laskey, Scouts T. Hughes, D. Hughes, W. Kidd, M. Kemp, D. Milne, E. McKinstrey, P. Tasker. First year: Seconds A. Beechey, W. Goddard, A. Jellyman. Second-Class Badges.—Seconds: J. Derbyshire, A. Beechey, Scouts A. Jellyman, P. Tasker, E. McKinstrey, W. Goddard, T. Priestly. Proficiency Badges.--Patrol-Leader J. Fraser (First All-round Cords, bookbinder, public healthman, Ambulance). Patrol-Leader Earl (first All-round Cords, public healthman, handyman), A. Jellyman (bookbinder), T. Hughes (cook). Priestly and Martin (ambulance). The shield for May was won by the Swift Patrol, the Eagle Patrol coming second. The following boys were enrolled: L. Kernot, G. Milne, L. Green, L. Massey, G. Easton, J. Best and G_ Kerr. Among the guests were representatives of the Manurewa, Drury and Papakura Girl Guides, and Pukekohe, Mount Albert and Orere Boy Scouts. On Tuesday, June 5, the Punua Troop and Pack held a combined pound night in the Punua “den,” the occasion being the fifth birthday celebration of the pack. During the evening Commissioner Grigsby presented a thanks badge to Mrs. A. Watts fo.r her five years’ continual work for the good of the boys. The badge was given by the troop, pack and committee. Among the guests were Mrs. Addis and Mr. Middleton, both from England, and there was a grand total of 75 in the hall.
