TE KUITI BOROUGH
MAYOR URGES ECONOMY
The need for the strictest economy in borough expenditure was the keynote of the meeting of the Te Kuiti Borough Council on Monday evening. The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, presided.
The estimates for the year 1928-29 were tabled. In commenting on the financial position, the Mayor said: “We have come to the stage wl ) re we have to make the proverbial pint do for a quart. We have got to the stage where funds are getting shorter, and we will simply have to get more value next year for every pound spent.”
The present unsatisfactory financial position, he said, was attributable to (1) The transference of areas from the boi-ough to the county; (2) 60 acres had been taken by the Railway Department as a railway settlement site; (3) sections were reverting to the Crown owing to the inequity of valuations; and (4) native rating. The borough’s ordinary revenue for the ensuing and future years would show a loss of £1,400. Even with half this amount, wonderful results could be achieved in road works. He emphasised the necessity for a revaluation of the borough, and said the question should be strenuously prosecuted.
. The estimates were then considered They provided for an expenditure of £13,363 6s 2d.
At a meeting of the Te Kuiti Rural Intermediate Credits Association. Messrs. A. Sutherland, R. R. Dean, E. Tolme, and J. N. Boddie were appointed provisional directors, and Mr. R. M. Somerville acting-secretary and treasurer. The memorandum and articles of association have now been completed and forwarded to the Rural Credits Bop.rd for registration.
