SINGING SEASON
OPENED TO-DAY STRAND THEATRE FILLED The community singers “kicked-off” the new season at the Strand Theatre to-day, every seat in the house being filled. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, who officially opened the singing season, said that it was the sixth to be held in Auckland, and it would consist of 12 weekly “sings.” Last year the singers had handed over the sum of £ 130 to unendowed charities in the city. Taking up the baton, the Rev. Jasper Calder led singers in the National Anthem, and followed it up with the “Cheer Germ” song, a special feature of this' being the version by “ladies without holes in their stockings.” “Bye Bye Blackbird” was resurrected with musical honours, and a new idea was tried, part-singing. The song chosen for the experiment was “The Indian Warrior’s Grave,” and it went very well. “Jasper’s” Entertainers, who were on the stage, helped the singing'.
