WON £3,000 AT RACES

FEDERAL BRIBERY INQUIRY FORMER MEMBER’S FINANCES (United P.A. — B y Telegraph — Copyright) CANBERRA, Tuesday. The Royal Commission set up to inquire into the bribery charges made by Mr. William H. Lambert, Labour member of the House of Representatives for West Sydney, resumed its sittings to-da>. Mr. Lambert’s allegation was that when Mr. E. G. Theodore, formerly Premier of Queensland, was looking for a safe Labour seat 18 months ago he (Mr. Lambert) was offered a bribe of £B,OOO by a former supporter of the Labour Party to resign his seat to Mr. Theodore. He declined to do this, although the money was very tempting. Mr. Theodore, he said, was afterwards provided with the Dailey seat, Mr. W. G. Mahony making; way for him. Mr. Mahony to-day denied the allegation that he was offered £B,OOO to vacate his seat in favour of Mr. Theodore. He explained that the money which he had paid for a hotel at Balmain was the proceeds of investments at the Melbourne Cup meeting in 1928, when he won between £3,000 and £4,000. He brought this money from Melbourne in notes, which he hid behind old copies of Hansard in a bookcase at his home. He kept the news of his winnings to himself, because when a Labour man was known to have money “lugbiters” became very persistent.
