CAPITOL
“QUALITY STREET” “Quality Street,” the story of Sir James Barrie’s well-known play, will be shown to-night at the Capitol Theatre, with Marion Davies in the leading role. Against a background of old rural England, Marion Davies brings to life again “Phoebe Throssel.” Her young womanhood, the loss of her lover, her ten years teaching school to the village youngsters, with its pity, scandal, and unconscious humour, and the return of her lover when Phoebe battles with her aging appearance and manners—all are told with great artistry, engrossing interest, and Marion Davies’s delicate personal charm. As Doctor Valentine Brown, Phoebe’s lover, Conrad. Nagel gives an inspired performance. “The Chaser,” Harry Langdon’s latest comedy, will also be shown.
screen version of Donn Byrne’s great novel, is coming shortly to Auckland Victor McLaglen repeats his histronic triumphs of “What Price Glory” and “Mother Machree.” In fact, he surpasses the roles that made him famous, with his characterisation of Citizen Hogan, the avenging soldier of the Foreign Legion, in this gripping romance of Ireland. McLaglen is not the only actor in this production. June Collyer, Larry Kent, Earle Foxe and Hobart Bosworth give performances that help to make this production one of the outstanding screen entertainments of the present season.
It is almost impossible to realise the amount of physical and mental energy which a director of a big picture puts into a production. When Harry Pollard was through with “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” it was necesasry for him to take a two months’ rest. Now Paul Leni, who has just completed “The Man Who Laughs,” with Conrad Veidt and Mary Philbin, has taken to his bed. The doctor calls it nerve fag and has ordered him to take a two weeks’ complete rest. But “The Man Who Laughs” is completed and will shortly be seen in Auckland.
