“PICTURE BRIDES”
CANADA AND JAPANESE CHECKING INCOMERS (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian P.A.—United Service) OTTAWA, Saturday. The practice of sending for Japanese “picture brides” is to end. The Prime Minister, Mr. Mackenzie King, made an announcement to this effect in the House of Commons, and he also announced that the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baron Tanaka, had informed the Canadian Government that Japan expected that the total number of Japanese emigrants to Canada under the new administrative measures, which come into force on September 1, would not exceed 150 a year. Mr. King said that in the future immigration from Japan the approval of passports, and the pre-investigation of applicants, would be administed by the Canadian officials in Los Angeles.
