TOBACCO FIRM’S “SECRETS”
ENGLISH WOMEN SMOKE MOST English women are the heaviest women smokers in the world. Soldiers and outdoor workers are the heaviest smokers of all. Clergymen smoke very much above the average. Most cigarettes are smoked between 6 and 7 p.m. These interesting facts were disclosed to visitors to Messrs. Player’s Nottingham factory on the occasion of the firm’s centenary. Founded in 1828 by a Mr. William Wright, and acquired by the Player family in 1876, the business is now carried on in buildings covering 21 acres. In 50 years the firm’s employees have increased from 150 to 5,000.
“No smoking” is the rule in tobacco fartories, but there are workmen at Player’s who, for half a century, have been helping to foster the smoking habit in others. The two oldest women workers are Gertrude Haywood and Emma Wood, with 43 years’ and 48 years’ service respectively. A new six-storey factory, with about three acres of flooring, will be opened this year.
