BIG U.S. BUDGET.—In the session just closed, the United States Congress made total appropriations in excess of £925,600,000. This •was the largest Budget for a single year’s expenditure in peace time in the history of the United States.—A.P.A. LOST IN ARCTIC.—There is still no news of the missing airship Italia. A message from Stockholm says that the Swedish Cabinet has decided to send three airplanes, with army wireless operators on board, immediately td join in the search for General Nobile and his companions.—A.P.A.-U.S. HOBBS INJURED. —The famous Surrey professional cricketer, J. B. Hobbs, has strained a muscle in his.thigh. He will not be able to play for the Players against the Gentlemen in the annual match at the Oval. The accident is not serious, but rest is essential. He hopes to be able to play again before long.—A.P.A.-U.S. FORGERY OV NOTES.—The remaining three accused men in the Melbourne note forgery charges—John Howarth, a contractor, Benjamin Thomas, a tailor, and Ralph Miller, a retired farmer —were found not guilty on charges of conspiring to forge banknotes. and with being knowingly concerned in the forgery of £ 5 notes, and they were discharged. ISLANDERS TO DlE.—Radio advices from Tulagai state that the trial of the principals in the Malaita massacre has concluded. In addition to the sentence of death on the chief Bassiano, which was passed in April. Jairo, Tonarmge, Luita, Tolio and Tufaui were sentenced to death. Five other natives were sentenced to imprisonment for life and 11 others to terms of from three to 20 years’ imprisonment.
