FROM SEVEN CANOES

ROOTS OF TE PUEA’S TREE

Even in these modern days aristocratic blood still counts for much with the Maori. It is seldom indeed that a Maori of rank though can trace descent from seven of the famous canoes that successfully landed in Mew Zealand, after the hazardous journey from ancient Hawaiiki. Though to boast of her birth would be the last thing that Princess Te Puea would ever do, she can still proudly claim this unique distinction. Te Puea Herangi had direct ancestors in the Tainui, Te Arawa, Matatua, Takitimu, Kurahaupo, Tokomaru, and Aotea. With the exception of the Aotea, all these canoes landed in the region of the Bay of Plenty. Princess Te Puea and her Merry Maids from the Waikato, will appear at the Majestic Theatre next week in a special all-Maori programme. The fees which the Fuller-Hayward management will pay this talented combination of 17 skilled performers, will go toward the establishment of the Hostel-Hospital for Maoris, which the Princess is erecting at historic Ngaruawahia.
