MR. SAVAGE IN COUNTRY

NGARUAWAHIA ADDRESS (From Our Own Correspondent) NGARUAWAHIA, To-day. Mr. M. J. Savage, M.P. for Auckland West, and deputy-leader of the Lab fur Party, addressed a meeting of electors in Ngaruawahia last evening. He said that the number of his party was only 14 in a house of 80, and such an overwhelming majority of Government members did not conduce to healthy democratic government. The Minister of Finance, in a recent address, had claimed that the country was paying its way. That statement he challenged. Though certain loans had been paid off, they had been renewed by others at a higher rate of interest. The crying need of the country was more primary products. In the face of that, farmers were walking cff their farms. Immigration was needed, but not of the kind at present obtaining. That merely increased the number of unemployed. He advocated a better system of land settlement, encouragement of secondary industries, a system of unemployment insurance, and a universal sr/-r----annuation scheme. At the conclusion of Mr. Savage’s address, Mr. W. Lee-Martin, M.P., briefly addre-'vsd the meeting, at the close of which a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the speakers.
