ON THE GREEN

Bowls and Bowlers

By

JACK HIGH

ORPHANS ON THE GREEN The initiation on Saturday last of a bowling contest between the members of the Auckland Orphans’ Club and the Carlton Bowling Club was a great success. ‘ Mr. A. B. Barter, president of the Carlton Club, in welcoming the Orphans, on behalf of his fel-low-members, specially emphasised his pleasure at such a gathering. ORPHANS WIN FIRST MATCH No fewer than six rinks were ocupied in the contest, and it was clearly demonstrated that the Orphans were first-rate exponents of the game. The result was an easy victory for them by four games to two, and 128 points to 104. The following are the individual scores and teams: Orphans (Dickson, Whittaker, C. Mountain, Sneddon), 25, v. Carlton (Richardson. Scherer. Cook, Clarkson), 12. Orphans (Watson. Packman, McLeod. Burke), 24, V. Carlton (Hodge, Firman, Gillies, Fookes), IS. Orphans (Brown, Winthrop, T. Mountain, Mclnnes), 19, v. Carlton (Overy, Baird, Dillicar. Hosking), 23. Orphans (Turner, Yeoman, Bird, Duncan), 27, v. Carlton (Allwood. Whittaker, Gladding, Clarke), 17. Orphans (Coldicutt, Barter, Tonkin, Pascoe), 13, v. Carlton (Sawyer. Wright, Wishart, Kilgour), 19. Orphans (Allan. Quinn. Kelly. M. Walker), 20, v. Carlton (Little, Cross, Rowe, Truscott), 15. THE EDWIN STARS The holders of the Edwin Stars—minion Road. Clarke. Kelly. Ramsay, Roberts—met with a reversal on Saturday last at the hand's of Delamore, Joll, Baker, Fraser, of Mount Edei by the small margin of one point. Fraser was successful in winning the “stars” last winter season, and, strangely enough, on Saturday next he is to meet a team—Clarkson, Deare. Fookes, Wishart, of Carlton—with some of the personnel who won them from him then. On that occasion, A. G. Fookes skipped the team, but this player has been unwell for some months past, and is in the position of number three on Saturday next. However, Duncan Fraser is playing particularly well at the present time, and the chances of notching a win against him may not be so easy a matter as last winter, when he held the “stars.” THE JORDAN PINS Since the inception of this competition. about a month ago, the Jordan Pins have had a nomadic sort of existence. In the three first games that have been played, they have gone to no fewer than three clubs, not having been retained by the holders on one occasion. On this occasion Te Papapa was successful on Saturday last, the scores being Johnson, Speight, Marks, Bridge, 23, and Hill, Thompson. Ward, Goldsmith, Williamson (Hillsboro), 22. The game was well contested throughout. Both sides are credited with playing sterling bowls. WINTER BOWLING BOOMING Saturday last, bing a fairly warm winter day, the numerous greens in play were positively crowded with bowlers. Indeed, some had an overplus of applicants for games, which clearly evidences the increasing popularity of the game on the green for this season of the year, and is warm encouragement for those clubs contemplating the laying down of winter greens. There is no doubt about the excellence of the surfaces now in use. For lovers of the game they present a great source of delight after the drought-stricken areas of a few months ago. KING’S BIRTHDAY TOURNAMENTS The day was very cold for bowling on Monday, King’s Birthday, despite a fair amount of sunshine. The Carlton Club held an open tournament with a good field of entries. J. Sneddon was the ultimate winner, making a fine finish to a particularly brilliant day of bowling. At the commencement of the last head of the completing game, he was one down on the score-board, and when the skips changed over, he was still the one down on the head and the game consequently in the melting-pot. Playing a most exacting shot, he was suc-

cessful in trailing the jack back about ISin for three up, which was left unaltered by his opponent, Kilgour. It was a fine finish to a brilliant day of play. W. Perry skipped the team that was successful in being the runnersup. At Mount Eden On greens that were beautifully grassed and running sweetly and smoothly, 16 teams contested an allday tournament at Mount Eden of five games. A. Brackebush, of Auckland, with front-rankers from the home club, Baker, McKenzie and Berry, were successful in winning all the games, after some excellent bowling. The contests were well fought, with a fine margin of points between the winners and losers. At Onehunga At Onehunga, 24 teams of excellent calibre from various clubs met in an all-day tournament. The section-win-ners were McMaster (Stanley), Buckley (Grey Lynn), Hosking (Carlton) and Wright (Onehunga). Wright beat Hosking and will meet the winner of the other two sections on Saturday next. The Mount Albert Tournament The Mount Albert tournament also attracted good entries—26 in all. The notable feature of the day was the extraordinary finish of the B section, where no less than eight teams tied for the section honours, making another small tournament to be played to find the ultimate winning team. Maher, of West End, won the A section outright after some brilliant bowling. The Ponsonby Club The Ponsonby Club conducted an all-day tournament on Monday and the section winners are Letham and Bridges, who will meet in the final game on Saturday next. Those who enjoy the four-bowl game will welcome an all-day pairs tournament that is to be played on Wednesday, June 20. Announcement has been made that there is room for a further 14 entries. “WIGS ON THE GREEN” . Recent cables announce that the New' Zealand touring bowlers were again subject to a sound trouncing, this time at Middlesex. It is quite evident that if the Dominion’s efforts in the game on .the green are to ring with achievement, as in othe.r sports, it will of necessity be necessary to reconstruct the present method of sending teams abroad. As it is now, teams should be plainly labelled “we do not expect to win, we are only a touring bowlers’ party, and not a New Zealand rep. side.” THE EPSOM CLUB The Epsom Club on Monday had the large entry of 24 teams. Keatley, of Rocky Nook, maintained his Easter form and came through with five wins to his credit, while Blakey (Epsom) and Ritchie (Carlton) captured the honours in the other section. CLUB JOTTINGS Three interesting finals are to be played at the Ponsonby Bowling Clubs green on Saturday. Two are pairs competitions, when G. Buchan and J. Dick will meet W. Buckle and W. Best, and W. Pardington and R. Somervell will play J. Conway and J. Torrance. These games should produce some good bowling, as the pairs playing have been associated for two seasons. The third final is that of Monday’s tournament, when Letham (Ponsonby) and Bridges (Epsom) each finished with four wins. Bridges’s rink has had quite a lot of play together on the Ponsonby green recently, and Letham, with his number three (Aitchison), has been most successful this season. Therefore a very keen game should result. The club will hold a pairs tournament on Wednesday, June 20, and invites 14 entries, as five skips have already accepted. The final of the Mount Eden Bowling Club’s King’s Birthday tournament, between two Mount Eden teams, was played at Mount Eden yesterday afternoon, with the following result:—Wright, R. Robertson, Daisley, Elliott 24, v. Barry, McKenzie, Brackebush, Baker 16.
