The Manukau Amateur Cycle Club is to be congratulated on the way in which it caters for its members. Always with an eye to fostering the sport of cycle racing, this young club never loses sight of a chance to promote a road race during the road season when opportunity offers. ' Saturday being its usual week-end J cing day, it held its usual weekly race, but Monday an off day, being King’s Birthday—and a holiday—was quickly picked on as a day to hold an extra race. One of the best contested races held by the club this season was the result. There were 29 starters and the j distance was 17 miles. The handieapper in his adjustments appeared to leave the back-markers well and truly placed, but withdrawals and improved form beat him. He, however, had the satisfaction of seeing a promising youngster in ID. Hope romp home the winner. ***** * ZZ-r&Ue
trial event by the Manukau Amateur Cycle Club, and a 25-mile open handicap event by the Auckland Athletic and Cycling' Club. Both races will start from the usual places at 2.30 p.m. sharp. All riders are requested to be at their starting posts on time, so that both races can be started punctually. A DISTANCE TEST With 35 starters in its 34-mile road race on Saturday the Manukau Club held its longest race this season. The field was a thoroughly representative one, and comprised all the leading road riders associated with the Manukau Club. With M. P. Byrnes and J. 11. Wade on the mark of honour, H. R. Dwight and J. Whitten lm, J. F. Casev. C. G. Galbraith and A. W. Pinker on 2m, the opinion of those able to judge favoured the winner coming from among these amateur knights of the pedal. But as so often happens, form plays a most important part in these races, and though the back men at times showed glimpses of speed, they were never is t&e hunt at the finish.
J. C. Stewart, the winner of Saturday’s 34-mile event, was the fittest £ rider competing. He finished up his . hard ride without turning a hair. Stewart will be a very hard rider to beat * in this season’s long-distance events, as he simply loves these long races. His finishing sprint on Saturday, when he beat a good one in F. Taylor for second place, was the finished article. PROMISING JUNIOR D. Hope, the winner of Monday’s 17mile piece de resistance, is only a boy being under 16 years of age. He seems to have the handicapper’s sympathy, as in the junior handicap races he figures alone on the scratch mark, but in the senior open events, where he has good riders all round him, he is placed on the useful mark of 3.45. His finishing effort on Monday, together with his fine pacing during the running of the race, was the feature of the afternoon’s racing. BYRNES GETS FASTEST TIME M. P. Byrnes again accounted for J. H. Wade in the race for fastest time in Saturday’s 34-mile event. Racing for the finishing line. Wade held the lead 150 yards from the winning post, but Byrnes unearthed a final kick and landed him the winner by a length and a-half. “Velos” never seen I finish - .7 j
