HOARDING LICENCES
COMPANIES OBJECT TO COUNCIL’S RULING POSITION AT TAKAPUNA At the last meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council applications for the renewal of licenses on hoardings of Messrs. Chandler and Company and the Goldfinch Company were refused. Last evening letters protesting against this action were received. The Goldfinch Company stated that several important contracts had been made for this year as no advice was received from the council before the licence expired on March 31. It would cause undue hardship if the hoardings must be removed. That the licence granted could be renewed indefinitely, is the view of Messrs. Chandler and Company. The advertising panels at Belmont are similar to those on the platform during the recent Advertising Exhibition at the Town Hall and are held by the company to be not unsightly. Their position was approved by the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Williamson, the engineer, Mr. A. Slinger, and Councillor G. C. Malcolm when erected and do not obstruct the view at the corner as much as permanent buildings on the street front would. The letters were forwarded to the borough solicitor who is preparing a report on the council’s power to refuse a renewal of the licences. A new scale of fees was approved by the council. The charge of 10s for every hoarding has been replaced by one of £1 10s for the first six square feet and £1 for every additional three square feet or portion.
