TALENTED PIANISTE
MISS DOROTHY DAVIES RETURNS DISTINGUISHED RECORD A New eZaland girl who has recently gained great distinction in the Australian musical world is Miss Dorothy Davies, daughter of Mr. D. Davies, of Auckland. Miss Davies has recently returned from Australia under engagement to the New Zealand Broadcasting Company, at Christchurch, and will be making her debut in that city in the course of the next few days. It was at Wanganui College that Miss Davies received her early musical training, gaining her A.T.C.L. and L.A.B. under the tuition of the late
Mrs. Redwood. Later she acted as temporary instructor, continuing in that capacity until advised to go abroad to further her studies. At quite an early age she left the Dominion, and entered the New South Wales Conservatorium, where her talents quickly won. recognition from its talented director, Mr. Frank Hutchens. Among other distinctions, Miss Davies enjoys that of being the only New Zealander to win the Yvonne Charvin Scholarship, an award which entitled her to two years’ free tuition at the conservatorium, and which naturally is much coveted by students. This gave rise to considerable controversy as to wTiether the prize, given by an Australian, should be held only by an Australian, but in view of the very high marks obtained by Miss Davies it was decided that it would be impossible to deprive he;r of the award. Besides many public and lecture recitals, Miss Davies has toured New South Wales, gaining warm receptions from Australian audiences. She also did much accompanying with Ethel Osborne, who went Home under Clara Butt.
