APPRENTICE ORDERS
AMENDMENT ASKED FOR DECISION RESERVED (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. In the Arbitration Court to-day the North Canterbury Carpenters and Joiners, and the Christchurch Furniture Trade Workers, sought an amendment to the apprenticeship order, which was strongly opposed by the employers. For the unions, Mr. E. C. Sutcliffe said the amendment asked for was that every employer desiring to employ an apprentice should, before engaging him, make application in writing to the Apprenticeship Committee. It was further set out that the committe should either grant or refuse the apprentice, after inquiring into the facilities within the scope of the proposed employer’s business for teaching an apprentice.
His Honour said the Court would approve of the principle and reserve its decision on all questions.
