Will Glendowie Add to Laurels?
AUCKLAND CARD FOR TO-MORROW THE programme for the final day to-morrow of the Auckland winter meeting, with its fine list of acceptances in j : all events, promises well for an interesting day’s sport. The jumping contests, with one exception, have filled splendidly, and with good fields on the fiat, backers will be up against it, as usual. A review of the prospects is given below. ] 1 7Q TAMAKI STEEPLECHASE * Of £400; about 21 miles Brigadier Having failed in the big race on Hangawera . 9 6 Bill . ... 12 0 Monday, Brigadier Bill lias been re- *?* the San'FeTr. 1 ? 912 du^ d t 0 ™ iT ?£ r c ™ ipa !! y ’ but be d ? es Bahadur !9 1 ’Lady Cintra. 9 12 not handle the Ellerslie country too prince Lupin 9 0 Clockwork . . 9 10 well. The two that may be most fancied are:— MANGANI and KAMEHAMEHA t ? 1 C ORAKEI HURDLES Of £400; If miles Kilburn . . . 10 9 The two winners at the fixture to Gold Rain ..96 ‘ *in n date, Kilburn and Bourn, head the Scot Free . • 0 - LadySpal- ‘ “ st - and the latter should go better .* 9 0 peen . .10 0 to-morrow than on Monday, when cullgie ... 9 0 Mangani ... 910 a bandaged leg appeared to bother Kaihoremai . 9 0 Quincoma ..98 him. It is a big field, unlikely to be very much reduced by scratchings. The favourites may be: PUKERIMU and BOURN 1 C YORK HANDICAP Of £750; one mile Kins Lu ... 10 2 This is a fine field, and with no Mervette ... 84 High Pitch . 0 2 less than 22 acceptors the early rush Te Koroke ..84 Sir Archie . 9 1 for positions is going to tell the • • • • ® -t Eden® Hall' ! 9 0 tale ' King L uha S run two honest oa P t Gazeiey S 0 Day Guard Sll races to date, but High Pitch has Cynthia N. . 8 0 King Smock Sll been unlucky; to-morrow’s distance Master Doon s 0 Queen Arch . Sll will be his best. Sir Archie will Nucleus ..80 Town Bank . 8 8 also be favoured by a mile course, Schorr ... 8 0 Corinax ... 8 7 while of the remainder Branson, Day TUursby ... so Stormy . . . S 6 Tinokoa ... 8 0 Guard, King Smock, Queen Arch, Town Bank. Mervette, Te Korolce (unlucky yesterday), Lomint, Nucleus and Tinokoa should be in the picture. The best half dozen may comprise King Lu, King Smock, Queen Arch, Stormy (who got a bump at the bottom of the straight yesterday), Mervette (who weakened at the end of the mile and a-quarter on Saturday) and Te Koroke. It is a race in which luck will play its part, but with a good run backers may plump for; STORMY and TE KOROKE 3 55 WINTER STEEPLECHASE B. Cavalier . 12 0 Of £1,250; about 3 miles Wed. March . 11 2 it is gool j to see all the five top-weights standing TiXi 1 " 10 9 their ground, for then there is every prospect of the Glendowie ’’ 10 7 Great Northern being run all over again, and furnish Kawini ... 10 2 another test for Glendowie, who will be able to prove Maunga . .10 2 himself if as good as his Monday’s victory suggested. Wiltshire . . 10 0 Beau Cavalier has been let up a couple of pounds, hut Pouri . . , . 9 4 that will stil j Und him out, going on Monday’s effort. Kamehameha 9 0 Wedding March had a very hard race in the Llewellyn . . 9 0 big hurdles the first day. Of Comical backers may be content' to take a risk, for he seems to be unlucky; he certainly was in the Great Northern. At the time he ran off he looked a winner. Tuki won this race last year, and should again be dangerous, considering that he is handsomely treated with a rise of only a couple of pounds. Glendowie will be the favourite, of course, and the extra stone may not seriously bother him over the shorter journey. He looks the pick of the handicap. Kawini surprised by the manner in which he finished on in a hurdle race the first day, hut may not he quite forward enough for such a strenuous contest. Of Maunga one can be enthusiastic, for he was going in great style when he went out of the contest, probably through not fault of his own. He may make amends. Wiltshire’s jumping will need to improve, although he has the pace. Pouri may do better over the shorter journey, but Passin’ Through, Kamehameha and Llewellyn do not make a great appeal. It is going to he a fine contest, in which backers may decide in favour of: — GLENDOWIE and MAUNGA O 4ft CAMPBELL HURDLES Of £600; two miles Aberfeldy . . 10 11 The fact t j, at only a quartette have paid up shows Pen ms ' ' 9 9 what a gruelling contest hurdle races at Ellerslie proGlencann'y*. 9 0 vide. Aberfeldy’s good showing on Monday should cause him to gain friends. Mia Bella has had two hard races, and so cannot be at her best now. If there is not much pace on she may he very conspicuous. However, this will also suit the top-weight, and Peneus, who may go /letter than generally expected. Glencanny, in the event of the four runners completing the course, should he fourth. Two that will come in for heavy support are:— ABERFELDY and MIA BELLA o OC VISITORS’ HANDICAP O'LiO of £600; six furlongs Kingfield 10 3 Archeen ... 80 Nancy Lee' 912 While the open hurdles has drawn Ballymoy 11.. 8 0 Royal Tea ! 9 7 a small field, the open sprint has Bracken Hoariri .... 9 5 more than its share of acceptors. Abbey . s u %f, Kingfield ran very forward under a ’% o Ora«?n JUI et 9 l big weight the second day and there ““"“l KmS ; | 0 Lorient 11, 8 5 is no denying the fact that he likes Romfora ...SO Whaka King 8 5 the soing soft. Nancy Lee is due, The Fox. ..80 Billikins .. ! 8 0 for she has run honestly on each day. Have may show up, and Hoariri will find the conditions to his liking, albeit wanting a race. Flying Juliet has disappointed considerably, but Oration should he very much in the picture, for he is now perhaps at his best. Lorient 11., got badly away on Saturday and was not sighted, although the betting showed him 'to be fancied. Whaka King stopped badly on Monday, and Billikins has a ton of speed for this distance, the way she hung on over a mile on Saturday being illuminating. Archeen is to make his first appearance, and Tinker may be in the picture with him. Ballymoy 11., has shown speed, ana further down we come to Hyde Park (who did a fine gallop last week), the speedy Marble King, Romford and The Fox. The best half dozen look like Nancy Lee, Oration. Lorient 11., Billikins, W haka King and Marble King, and out of them the actual favourites on the totalisator may be: — BILLIKINS and ORATION A 1 C FITZROY HANDICAP of £400; one mile Modest Boy 912 Not by a great deal has a division king S 0 Tauri'm’u' ; ; 8 9 been avoided. Modest Boy has gone Miss Myrtle 8 0 Oscar .... S 5 well in his two races, being closer s r, Wakfl 8 4 . S 0 Hall (who was a bit unlucky the Segment . . so Kildeer . . .80 second day). and Segment. It is a big field, but not many can be fancied on their efforts to date. Those that look possibilities can be said to be Modest Boy. Oscar, Te Waka, Arikitoa, Bluespear and Moe Hall, and it is the task of the backers to fine them down further. The machine fancies may comprise:— ARIKITOA and MOE HALL
