DISTANCE CYCLING

STEWART’S GOOD WIN BYRNES GETS FASTEST TIME In perfect weather the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club held its longest race this season on Saturday. The distance, 34 miles, was covered by J. C. Stewart (smins), the winner, in 94mins 21secs, while the scratch rider, M*. P. Byrns, went 93m 56 4-ssec., over the same journey, and secured fastest time. The race itself was a very interesting one to watch. For more than half the journey the limit riders held the lead, but died on it over the last two laps. Here Stewart’s bunch took the lead and were never afterwards troubled. The following is the result: —J. C. Stewart (smin), 1; F. Taylor (smin), 2; J. Spence (6min), 3; J. D. Scobie (7min). 4. Time of winner 94min 21 sec. Fastest time, M. P. Byrns 93min 56 4-ssec. Won by a length and a-half; half a length between second and third. wards hardly touching the ball. Later there was more team work, and the second half witnessed some good concerted movements on both sides. Here the Whites held the advantage, and play seldom left Otahuhu’s half. The Colts will have to improve the shooting of the forward line, notably Sawyers and Edwards. On several occasions an easy shot went wide of the net. On the other hand the attack of the Whites was good and, but for the weak link, Somerville would have piled up a comfortable margin. Munro penalised his side continually for “sticks.” Otahuhu assumed aggressive tactics during the second half, but it was not until near time that Somerville was hard-pressed. The goal by Gardiner from a cpnfused tangle of hockey sticks and legs in the circle was larg€:ly a question of luck.
