PRINCESS AND TIVOLI
“THE WHIP WOMAN” Estelle Taylor and Antonio Moreno are the stars in “The Whip Woman,” a dramatic yet beautiful story of the love of a peasant girl for a drunken I Hungarian noble. Estelle Taylor plays the role of Olna. a Hungarian peasant girl, the disgrace of her village, because she repulses the advances of all suitors. Her defence is the strong butt of an oxwhip, and she lashes unmercifully the men who attempt to approach her. She wears her dead brother’s tattered army uniform while she ploughs on her farm by day. At night she ie a waitress in the village cafe. Into the village one night reels a seedy sot, once a noble, now an outcast, Michael by name, played by Antonio Moreno. He is about to end his life by throwing himself in the Danube. He spends his last money on a drink, insults Olna, and, thinking he will be killed by the peasants, he puts up a fight. Instead he is simply beaten and thrown out. Although still hating him. the girl befriends him, and takes him to her room, despite his insults, then knocks him out with her whip, and puts him to bed. Also, she falls in love with him, but hates herself for doing so. because she feels in her heart that being a noble he will only leave her. The second attraction on the programme is “Private Affairs,” a. delightfully humorous story of scandal in a small town. The story commences with the discovery of a packet of letters lost in the local post office for five years. Their arrival! causes a tremendous upheaval in the town. The cast is headed by Mildred Harris, Gladys Hulette and Robert Agnew.
