HOLIDAY SPIRIT
AUCKLAND OUT OF DOORS THOUSANDS ATTEND RACES The holiday spirit envelopes Auckland to-day; the insistent call of the carnival is irresistible. Many thousands of Aucklanders and visitors from the South to-day are spending their holiday in the great out-of-doors. The racing at Ellerslie is the sporting attraction-in-chief, but the city provides other diversions for the modest recreative taste. There was a steady influx of visitors during the week-end, and to-day trains, buses and boats were crowded with holiday-making crowds. The fine day enabled the exponents of new styles to display the latest frock creations —winter wear which now bears the hall mark “worn at Ellerslie.” Others there were who cared more for the chances of Beau Cavalier in the Steeples than for the foremost figure in the parade of fashion. Ellerslie looked its best in the pale morning sun which peeped from the rising cloudbank, and the track was in just that right order for good racing. The Governor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson) and Lady Alice Fergusson attended the races this afternoon. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, reached the course before lunch. A military and naval parade drew many people to the Domain, where the troops were inspected by the GovernorGeneral. Association and Rugby representative football matches are being played between Auckland and Waikato teams, and hockey, league and cycling are receiving a share in the sport attractions. Golf and bowling clubs have arranged tournaments, and in fact every sport in the city has its following for holiday events. In the city all is quiet—except in those business places where industry must proceed whatever happens—but this evening all will be hustle and bustle again. Crowds will flock to theatres and dance halls to finish the holiday well; others will be content to remain by the fireside and reflect upon method of speculation, the caprice of the totalisator as a Auckland is enjoying its holiday, but to-morrow the city will be back to business as usual.
