CROWDED TRAINS
RACEGOERS FLOCK TO CITY HEAVY RAILWAY BOOKINGS Crowds are flocking into Auckland for the races. Every train which arrived this morning was crowded to capacity. The first express which arrived from Wellington this morning was some hours late. Several extra carriages had to be put on to cope with the crowd, and even the total of 20 cars did not provide the accommodation which was called for. Passengers packed even the platforms of the Limited. An extra .sleeping car had been put on, and one •if the first-class cars removed, but even then travellers were standing on every available inch of space. Last evening, the train which usually arrives from Frankton Junction at II p.m. did not arrive until 20 minutes later. There was not a spare seat on her. The Whangarei train carried over SOO passengers, and was late in reaching Auckland. This was due to a slight breakdown on the way. All outgoing trains to-day were crowded with travellers who are leaving the city for the week-end. Both the Thames and Rotorua expresses were packed. This year most race-goers seem to be using the race-trains. From early to-day crowds flocked to the railway station, which presented a picture of animation usually associated with Christmas and Easter. Heavy bookings have been recorded for the Wellington trains for the weekend and Monday. Queues lined the booking office this morning until a late hour.
