JOY OF GIVING

100 PER CENT. CHARITY SALE AT TOWN HALL “Gimme tuppence worth of German sausage, Mister?” The small boy pushed his coppers across a temporary counter. “A napple, please, miss.” demanded a business-like little girl. The apple cost a penny. These purchases, made in Hip* con_ «:ert chamber of the Town Hall last evening, show the spirit which prevailed at the sale and “advertising exhibition” promoted by the Rev. C. G. Scrimgcour, of the Methodist Central Mission, to raise funds to help the needy. It is a 100 per cent, charity scheme. All the funds go to help the poor. Tho hall was packed last evening. P'very stall, and there were many, was besieged. Bargain-hunters brazenly exhibited their joy at the wonderful array of goods. Youngsters demolished ice cream by ine gallon. Chocolates disappeared by the hundred weight. Large stacks of groceries were sold as fast as the assistants could make up the orders. Two white-clad figures presided over two gas-cookers. With lightning-like movements they transformed gleaming piles of flour into the most attractive tartlets and cakes, but not swiftly enough to supply the customers who waited patiently for their orders. An amateur butcher thumped his table. "Como on, the last white puddings and a bit of corned beef,” he yelled. The goods went in a flash. Long before closing time most of the stalls had been cleared. Then came a dancing turn by the IJentiee Trio, who had offered their services for nothing in the good cause. Mrs. C. Cl. Scrimgeour, president of the women’s ccmmittce, and the members of ii. Mesdames Galbraith, Quigley, Rutlidgo and McQuilliam toiled long hours, but they were not too tired to pay tribute to the many other "omen who had so willingly given their services. The sale and exhibition has been a great success. Nearly all the business .irms in Auckland gave either goods or money. The following Methodist Guilds were represented with stalls •nd helpers: Mount Eden, Birkenhead, Oevonport, Takapuna, Avondale, Dominion Road, Mount Albert, Kingsland, Onehunga and Komuern.
