MAY WAS TWICE AS WET AS USUAL
nPHE rainfall in Auckland for the month of May was 10.41 inches, according to observations made at the Albert Park Observatory by the official Government observer.
This is more than double the rain which usually falls in May, the average for the month being 4.55 inches. Last month’s total has been exceeded on only two occasions during the past 72 years—in May, 1926, when 13.70 inches fell, and May, 1924, when 10.63 inches were recorded. The largest fall recorded in any month during the period was 14.15 inches, in February, 1869. There were only two rainless days during the month —May 26 and May 31-. There were two exceptionally heavy week-end downpours, which accounted for more than half the total. The deluge which descended on Sunday, May 13, and caused some flooding in low-lying areas, was the heaviest, a fall of 3.10 inches being recorded during the 24 hours at 9 a.m. on May 14. During the gale that raged last week-end the fail was nearly two and a-half inches.
