SUBMARINE ENGINES NOW SUPPLY POWER
PLANT AT PENROSE RUNNING THIS MORNING Thanks to the energy of the Public Works Department Auckland will have little to fear this winter from any breakdown in the electrical supply. This morning the supplementary sub-station at Penrose was in full working order, and for the first time took over a share of the city load. Several months ago great concern was expressed by the Auckland Power Board in regard to the electrical supply during the winter months. With Arapuni not completed as anticipated at the outset of the proposal, and a shortage of power apparent in the near future, the Government promised to instal a generating plant at Penrose to supplement the Hora Hora and King’s Wharf supply.
Owing to delay in the arrival of the plant it was considered impossible by the Power Board that it could be erected and be in running order in June as promised.
The challenge was taken up by the department and the job tackled with its characteristic thoroughness. By working three shifts a day the wont of erecting the three tremendous submarine engines of 3,000 h.p. each has progressed with astonishing rapidity, and to-day the engineers have the satisfaction of seeing the big plant in sat.i&factory running order.
