Accused got into a fast set when he came here from Christchurch and lived beyond his means. He did a and a little gamThis was part of the evidence of Detective Walsh, when a young 1 man, formerly a bank clerk, whose name was suppressed, was charged before Mr. S. L. P. Free, S.M., with obtaining money by false pretences, £2O from W. H. Cunningham, Crown Solicitor, on March 27, and £25 from John Forbes on March 31. The young man, who pleaded guilty, had signed a statement in which he admitted telling the two men that he was a permanent officer of the bank after he had left the bank’s employ. Mr. A. Brodie, who appeared for accused, said the latter came of a good family and this was the first occasion on which he had been in trouble. He had hoped to get money from his people in time to put things right. The magistrate, in granting probation for two years, made a condition that accused abstain from intoxicants during the term. He was also ordered to refund the money.
