THE BIG FOUR
Ellerslie’s Principal Attractions THE coming week-end will see the Auckland winter meeting in full swing. On Saturday, opening day, the three principal events will be the Great Northern Hurdles, Cornwall Handicap and Members’ Handicap. On Monday (King’s Birthday) there is the Great Northern Steeplechase. The horses remaining in these big four events are given below.
MOUNT MARTA’S FATE Mr. E. W. Ruddick, of Hawke’s Bay, bred Mount Marta, who was destroyed at Ellerslie yesterday as the result of an accident while schooling. It was in this sportsman’s colours that the Mountain Knight gelding won the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, the only classic the horse won, among the beaten being Lady Joyce and Subjection. Near the end of his three-year-old career Mount Marta was purchased by Mr. H. L. Russell, for whom he raced for some time. Six months ago Mr. E. L. Riddiford bought the horse, but quickly tired of him. and sold him quite recently to Mr. J. Stanfield, who raced Revel here at the autumn meeting. For his new owner Mount Marta ran second in hurdle races at Awapuni and Hawera, and then won the May Hurdles at Wanganui, these three efforts returning £225. By the way, there has been some comment in certain quarters on the delay in dispatching Mount Marta. Less than 115 minutes had elapsed before the friendly bullet was fired, but this time was occupied in having the horse examined. and permission obtained to destroy him, a necessary factor in these cases. Under the circumstances it is difficult to see where the complaint is justified.
AMATEUR RIDERS PRESENT LEADER MR. J. MORRIS, OF MARTON Apropos the paragraph which appeared anent the deletion of the Ladies’ Bracelet from the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's programme, the “Tribune” writer has since figured in a discussion regarding gentleman riders who have been prominent throughout the Dominion as well as in this district. Such amateurs as Messrs. P. P. Neagle, R. Harley, C. Gordon, G. Hirst, A. Hyde, G. D. Beatson, Alex Mitchell, R. Vivian and others found favour. In the writer’s opinion the present day champion, Mr. J. F. Morris, compares favourably with the best of the past. Although Mr. Morris does not belong to this district, most of his riding has been done in Hawke’s Bay, where his presence, no matter on what kind of animal, is sufficient to make it an odds-on favourite. Mr. Morris’s first ride was at Marton on New Year’s Day, 1918, or ten years ago, when on Blue Thread, nominated by his mother, he finished out of a place. His next ] niount was at Hastings when he won the Ladies’ Bracelet on Mrs. J. Bull’s All Over. Thus he opened his winning account in the Bay. During the ten years he has in all had 34 rides in Hawke’s Bay, and the record reads: 19 wins, 6 seconds, 5 thirds and 4 unplaced. In the last ten Bracelets decided at Hastings this ama-
teur, out of seven rides, has won five fAU Over twice, Omahu, Prodigal and Tameterang;), third on Complimentary and unplaced on Red Head. In all the Marton amateur has been legged up on 90 occasions, and his record to date reads: 36 wins, 20 seconds, 12 thirds and 22 unplacings, a percentage that either his brothers, B. IT. and L. G. Morris, two highly-successful profession; I horseman of the same ilk, would be proud to boast of.
i | Valuable Thoroughbreds For one trainer to have seven yearlings in his stable which cost £i0.225 is an unusual and heavy responsibility in Australia. It would not be such a marked happening in England, says an exchange, wheer values are proportionately greater. This is the lot of the Victorian trainer, Cecil Godby, at present. He has the Saltash— Weltea colt Dominant, who cost 6,750gn5; the Spearhead—Afterglowcolt. 2,400gn5; the Magpie—Lacreta gelding, 2,ooogns: the A r a7ais—Lady ! Capertee filly, l.OOOgns; the Devizes— ; Miss Pendil gelding. l.OOOgns; the j Magpie—Mockery filly, 7 .lOgns; and j the Top Gallant —Teal filly, 600gns. Added to these are 10 older horses, j whose total value is estimated at ! £13.000. Thus Godby lias thorough- ! bred stock to the value of £ 30,000 j under liis charge. J
The following are the acceptances for Saturday, and also for the Great Northern Steeplechase on Monday:—
OTHER EVENTS
Likes the Soft Going The yielding tracks now available for galloping purposes on the Southland Racing Club’s property are evidently to the liking of Queen Balboa, as the chestnut mare is bowling along very atractively in her work, says an exchange. She is probably better now than at any previous stage of her turf career and it is safe to say that she will put up stern lights in her engagements at Wingatui in the near future. She was not in any way distressed at the conclusion of a fairly strong gallop over a mile and a half last week, and it is on the cards that her more lightly-weighted rivals will not have it all their own way if she races in the Birthday Handicap at Dunedin on Saturday.
