The Paris correspondent of “The Times” says the lower death-rate in France was compensated for by a lower birth-rate in 1927 compared with 1926. The population of the country is now 40,960,000, which is the highest since the war. Births in 1927 totalled 741,718, the lowest since 1913; deaths 676,668, compared with 713,456 in 1926; marriages, 337,864. The latter have progressively declined and were the lowest since the war.
