Bedraggled U.S. Senators Sit All Night
Several Doze While Delivering Addresses BILL “FILIBUSTERED” (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. WASHINGTON, Tues. Weary and bedraggled senators who were physically exhausted after an allnight session, maintaining a so-called “filibuster” on the Boulder Dam project, received some hope of relief as noon approached, when the leaders worked out an agreement for a possible adjournment before nightfall. In the meantime, sleepy-eyed senators held the floor for hours at a time, during which periods many of them dozed, while they were supposedly delivering addresses. The high point of the night session was reached when Senator Blease heralded the dawn by mimicking birds’ cries and fluttering his hands. Others took short naps in the antechamber, and some tried to keep themselves awake by drinking iced coffee. The object of the “filibuster” is to frustrate the passage of the Bill by absorbing the remaining time of the sessions. Congress adjourned, for the summer late in the afternoon, after the Senate passed a resolution to that effect, ending the 24-hour “filibuster.” The House of Representatives passed a similar resolution shortly after the Senate.
