STRAND
“THE MERRY WIDOW” Nearing the completion of fits second week of screening is “The Merry Widow,” the magnificent screen version of the famous musical comedy. “The Merry Widow,” a Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer production from the famous stage success by the same name, tells the story of a prince who loves a chorus girl, but who is forbidden to marry because of the social barrier between them. Later she inherits a fortune, and to punish the prince in her own way for the manner in which he treated her, she humiliates him in public and precipitates a duel between him and his brother. Realising then, that she has only been deceiving herself, and that that she still loves the Danilo, “The Merry Widow” tries to undo the mischief she has already done, with alarming results. On the stage appears “Miss Ne' Zealand,” in conjunction with her vividly interesting film, “Miss New Zealand in Movieland,” depicting her adventures and travels in Hollywood, her meetings with the stars, and her screen tests which won for her a leading part in a Tim McCoy feature picture, “The Bushranger.” An effective stage prologue, with Miss Ina Bosworth as the solo violinist, and Mile. Valeska and Mr. Len Wilson as the solo dancers, precedes the photoplay. Eve Bentley and her Strand Symphony Orchestra delightfully render selections from the original musical score for “The Merry Widow,” in addition to the bright introductory march presented.
