THUNDERING WAIKATO
RIVER MAKES SPECTACLE AT ARAPUNI FLOOD CAUSES LITTLE EROSION (SUN’S Special Reporter.) HAMILTON, To-day. Though the Waikato River at Arapuni has been in flood now for over a week, predictions that the river under such conditions would run riot, causing further erosion on a big scale, have not, so far, been real ised. In spectacular effect the Arapuni lay-out with the river in its present flooded state has never been surpassed. Water is plunging over the spillway, to the accompaniment of a deep, ceaseless roar, while at the main falls the wild grandeur of the turbulent cataract is veiled by clouds of spray. In spite of the terrific power of the forces at work, there has been no recent erosion of any magnitude. The engineer in charge at Arapuni stated that, though the river had been running high for some days, no changes had occurred in the channel below the spillway. At Hamilton the river is very discoloured and above the normal level. Excursions are being run to Arapuni daily while the Winter Show is in progress, and falls in flood are proving a strong attraction.
