1928 SESSION OPENED j Fraternal greetings from many kindred clubs were received by the i Onehunga Orphans on Saturday even- | ins, when the eighth session of the I club was inaugurated. James Crawford, I president of the Savage and Orphans’ | Clubs of New Zealand, Bros. C. MounI tain and W. Packman, representing the Auckland Orphans’ Club: Bro. W. W. Massey, president of the Otahuhu ; Club; Bro. J. O. Louglilin, Pukekolie; Bro. J. W. Lethbridge, Birkenhead; and a contingent of naval men from H.M.S. Dunedin, while several apolo- • gies for absence, including one from his Excellency the Governor-General, were received. Among those present were the club’s patron, the Hon. Sir Frederic Lang. M.L.C.. and Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau. A welcome back to orphandorn was accorded to Bro. J. Lighton, the club’s orchestral conductor, who last session suffered ill-health. Bro. W. W. Massey, president of the Otahuhu Orphans’ Club, replied to the toast of the visitors and a good programme of instrumental, vocal and humorous items was given by Bros. G. Bennett, J. Pakesley, Duncan Black, F. Massee, F. Halliday. J. Simpson, J. B. Finlayson, E. A. Allen and J. Hall. AT DEVONPORT Mr. A. A. Hough, a former president, was chairman of the Devonport Orphans’ Club on Saturday evening, and his control of the session was thoroughly appreciated. The orchestra, under Conductor D'Autlireau. rendered “Poet and Peasant” and “Swanee,” other contributors to the programme being Messrs. T. de Clive-Lowe, ’cello: F. Baker, baritone; P. Evans, B. Inglis, Hawaiian Six; J. Bruce, Scottish songs: “Boy” Campbell, soprano, and Jones, baritone. The next session will be “Bowlers’ Night,’' when Mr. Jas. Pascoe will preside.
