MT. ALBERT PLAY AREA

GROUND FOR CHILDREN OPENING CEREMONY The children of Mount Albert now have their own play area in. the Morningside reserve. It was opened on Saturday afternoon by the Hon. George Fowlds. The equipping of this area is the first step toward the development of a big scheme for the establishment of general grounds for the Mount Albert Borough. The children, however, have been thought of first. Where there was once a borough dump, and thick gorse growth, is now a grassed ground equipped with merry-go-rounds, slides, and a drinking fountain. As more money becomes available the scheme will be developed further. There was a large assembly of ratepayers and children this afternoon for the opening ceremony. GOVERNMENT’S HELP Mr. L. E. Rhodes, Mayor of Mount Albert, said that the Morningside Reserve had been given to the Borough Council many years ago, but lack of money prevented any work being done on it. The council was now in the position to allocate some money for the reserve, and this, with a Government subsidy, enabled the present work to be done.

“It will cost a lot more to develop the major scheme,” he said, and the council would have to appeal to the ratepayers at a poll for further funds. In declaring the playground open, Mr. Fowlds said that 20 years ago, when he was Minister of Education, he made the grant of the reserve to the Mount Albert Borough. He was disappointed that its development had been so long delayed, but he was glad to know that the work had now begun.
