LONDON, April 19. Miss E. Spencer, of Wellington, is in England visiting relatives and friends. She is going to Scotland and the Lake District in the autumn. The following passengers sailed by the Jervis Bay for Australia, en route for New Zealand: Mr. and Mrs. Hithchon and two sons, Mrs. E. Johnson, Mr. T. Pearson, for Auckland; Mr. J. Robinson, for "Wellington. Miss M. D. Hall, of Cambridge, arrived in London about two weeks ago. She will be staying.in London at first, and later in the country before going to the Continent. Miss Hall expects to be away from New Zealand about a year. Canon and Mrs. J. C. Small and Miss Small, of Milton, Otago, arrived last week by the Athenic. The immediate object of their marriage is to be present at the marriage of Miss F. M. Small to Captain Francis R. Keeble, M.C., of Brantham Hall, Suffolk. Mrs. Purdie, of Auckland, who Is visiting England for her health, came over on the lonic with her small daughter, Gwendolen. Mrs. Purdie will be joined shortly by her parents and brother, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Williams, and Mr. Samuel Williams, who have just left New Zealand. -On April 16, the High Commissioner for New Zealand and Lady Parr attended a reception at the Junior Carlton Club, and were guests at the
Easter banquet at the Mansion House on April 17. On Wednesday, April 18, with Miss -Betty Parr, they were at the wedding of Miss Tully, at St. Paul’s, Knightsbridge. Mr. Thomas M. Wilford, who is visiting England, recently gave an interview to a representative of the “Morning Post,” in which he discussed the effect of the women’s vote. “No man who plays fairly with his constituents need fear the women’s vote,” said Mr. Wilford. He added that the young -women in New Zealand believed in the unity of the great Commonwealth of Nations which make up the Empire, and their votes made for stability. The Auckland Grammar School Old Boys held their annual London dinner on boat race night, March 31, at the Pall Mall Restaurant. Sir James Parr, High Commissioner for New Zealand, was in th© chair, and proposed the toaSt of the old school. He called upon Dr. Bernard Myers fo.r observations, and later Mr. Peart, now a house master at Epsom College, Mr. R. L. Hill, Mr. Firth, Mr. J. P. Whitelaw, Air. Wallingford, at present in the R. Major Hely Pounds also spoke. Sir James mentioned the sad death of Air. James Drummond, headmaster of Auckland Grammar School, and moved that messages of sympathy should be sent to Mrs. Drummond.
