BRANCH OF WELL-KNOWN OIL BUSINESS SOLD

ATLANTIC COMPANY’S PURCHASE H. 0. WILES’S PETROLEUM INTERESTS The petroleum branch of the business* carried on by Messrs. H. O. Wiles, Ltd., general importers, has been sold to an American firm, the Atlantic Union Oil Company, Ltd. The purchase price, which is stated to be considerable, has not been disclosed. For some time past H. O. Wiles, Ltd., has been carrying the Union Oil products among their many lines. Now the American firm has determined to open a branch in Ne.w Zealand and has appointed Mr. Wiles the Auckland manager. The offices will be those in Tasman Buildings, Anzac Avenue, at present occupied by H. O* Wiles, Ltd., which is moving to another part of the building and carrying on in the other departments. Mr. Downes, manager of the merchandise department, has been appointed general manager. Another branch of the Union Company has been formed in Wellington where offices have been taken in the Dominion Buildings. Large bulk tanks are to be erected in Beaumont Street and a complete stock of Union Motor Spirit, Atlantic Petrol, Union Lighting kerosene, Atlantic Power Kerosene, and all grades of lubricating oils and greases will be carried. No service stations will be erected but bulk kerbside pumps will be leased to garage owners. Subbranches are to be placed in the main provincial towns, including Gisborne and Hamilton. The Atlantic Union Oil Company is one of the largest petroleum organisations in the world, its resources amounting to £70,000,000. It refines 8,000,000 gallons daily in its nine refineries at Philadelphia, and employs a total of 20,000 men. Its 3,500 motor tank waggons operate in 27 countries served by 30 tank vessels. The Union Company products will be on the market as soon as stocks sufficient to supply the demand arrive in the Dominion.
