“FATHER OF THE UNION”
CAPT. COLBECK RETIRES (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Thursday. It was with strong: remonstrance that Captain F. Colbeck (Morrinsville) was allowed to retire-from the executive of the union at the provincial conference of the Farmers’ Union today. Captain Colbeck has been on the executive of the Auckland Union on and oft for the past 30 years, and has earned the title of “father of the union.” He was one of the first to inaugurate the movement, with Mr. A. C. G. Glass, in 1899, and was the first vice-president of the institution. Although he explained he would still be actively interested in the work of the union, he thought it better to resign from the executive in favour of younger men. Glowing tributes were paid to Captain Colbeck’s untiring work for the farmers’ interets over so long a period, and the resignation was accepted with regret. Mr. R. D. Duxfield, who has retired from the executive, after 25 years’ service, was made the subject of eulogistic references.
