£l,ooo ASIDE

BIG GOLF MATCH SMITH V. COMPSTON Archie Compston, who so sensationally beat the American, Walter Hagen, has accepted a challenge from another American, Macdonald Smith. The match will be over 72 holes, for £I,OOO a side, and will commence on June 1. The match will be played in two stages, 36 holes over Smith’s Lakeville course, and the other 36 on another New York course, which Compston chooses. Compston, after beating Hagen, challenged any golfer for any stake, anywhere. Duncan declares that Smith is the best golfer in America. Two years ago, at Prestwick, Smith had the British open in his grasp, but complained that he was mobbed and impeded by the crowd, which numbered 20,000.
