Stock Market Review
STRONG TONE REGISTERED HIDE VALUES EASIER MAY 24, 9 a.m. The strong tone registered in Dominion live stock circles over the past few months is well maintained. London reports at the end of last week indicated a firmer tone in the spot frozen meat market. A feature of interest to beef buyers should be the world-wide easier tendency in the hide market. This must eventually be reflected in Dominion beef prices. At Westfield yesterday a shorter yarding of cattle and a heavier yard- , ing of sheep than late offerings met with a market which held practically on a par with late rates. Addington reports indicate a general hardening I for all the main classes of stock. | Reports from Poverty Bay indicate heavy yardings for this time of the year, making satisfactory clearances on a firm market. At Stortford Lodge the tendency is also upward, and a further rise in prices was recorded last week. Yesterday’s offering of cattle at Westfield comprised an exceptionally large percentage of light and medium prime beasts. The quality generally was below that seen at late sales. This was especially the case in the cow and heifer sections. Bidding at times lacked spirit and tended to drag. Values held firm at late rates for all better finished cattle, but there was a slightly easier tone in the market for light and unattractive sorts. Show Cattle From Bay of Plenty Some exceptionally well finished cattle came forward from the Bay of Plenty district. One big boned deepframed bullock which should weigh out at approximately 1,5001 b on account of H. J. Gill, Te Pukq, made a season’s record at £2l ss. The same vendor was responsible for the best finished Herefords seen at Westfield for many months in a yard of two exceptionally fat young steers which made £l6 17s 6d. The cattle were really too fat for best butchers’ purposes. At Addington yesterday a total of 500 was yarded, including a number of well-finished drafts. Best prime beef made up to 41s per 1001 b in a few cases; prime, 37s 6d to 39s 6d; medium quality, 35s to 375; heavy weight. 33s 6d to 365; good cows, 32s to 355; ordinary, 28s to 31s; extra prime heavy steers realised up to £l9 17s 6d; prime heavy steers, £ls 15s to £18; prime handy weight steers, £l3 10s to £ls 10s; ordinary quality steers, £lO 15s to £l3 ss; light steers, £7 12s 6d to £lO 10s; extra prime heifers, to £l4 7s 6d; prime heifers, £lO 10s to £l2 ss; ordinary heifers, £8 to £lO ss; light prime cows, to £l4 12s 6d; prime cows, £lO to £l2; medium cows, £7 10s to £9 15s. Undoubtedly the Lest finished line of wethers at Westfield yesterday came forward on account Jas. Taylor, Cambridge. Not exceptionally big framed sheep, they were finished to perfection and carried a good weight of wool. The line made to 40s 3d. The market for sheep, generally, held firm at late rates. The quality of the offering was not up to last week’s, and the resultant lower listed average prices tended to convey the impression of a weaker market. Firm Market at Addington At Addington yesterday a heavy yarding of fat sheep sold at full schedule rates. Extra prime heavy wethers made 40s to 43s lOd; prime wethers, 35s 6d to 395; medium wethers, 32s to 355; light wethers, 29s to 31s; extra prime ewes, to 42s 7d; prime ewes, 29s to 335; medium ewes, 25s to 28s 6d; light ewes, to 245; poorconditioned and aged ewes, 17s 6d to 20s. Forward lambs and wethers sold at an advance and so did young ewes, but low-conditioned sorts were unchanged in price. Freezing Season Closing Lambs made fully last week’s rates at Westfield yesterday. A.t Addington a particularly firm tone prevailed, show Corriedales making 53s 4d and other extra prime lambs to 435. The recent substantial advance in the export rates mean little to the farmer, and few lambs, in fact, have. ; qualified for the highest priced grade | over the past month c»r so. The freezing season is expected to close in the South within the next ■ week or so, and little business of any moment can be expected in the North from now onward. A noticeable feature during the past month has been the increased attention given to -sales of dairy stock. Thero appears to be a strong demand for well bred young dairy cattle.
