PAEROA RATES GO UP The Paeroa Borough Council has decided to strike rates for the year 1928- i 29 totalling ninepence in the pound. This is an increase of 1 3-16 d over ] those for the previous year. The gen- , era! lighting financial adjustment loan and sewerage loan rates remain the , same, the domain improvements loan , rate shows a decrease of 1-16 d, but the , 1920 street improvements loan rate shows an increase, as does the hospital ! rate. The latter shows an increase of , 4d owing to the larger amount ievied for the current year. Provision is also required to collect a rate on the £2,000 relief of unemployment loan to meet the interest and sinking fund on the , loan. TAURANGA ANGLICANS NEW HALL WANTED J A resolution was passed at the annual meeting of the Church of England at Tauranga urging the vestry to consider the adoption of tho duplex envelope system. The Rev. A. F. Hall presided. Officers were elected as follows: Vicar’s warden, Air. L. Wallis; people’s warden, Air. J. H. Garrett; vestry, Mrs. Harris and Alessrs. Cross, Fenn, Andrews, Harris, Stevens, Shearman and Antwhistle; synodsman, Air. H. T. Lysaght; auditor. Air. W. J. Baigent. It was decided that application be made by the vestry to the Diocesan Standing Committee for a loan of £I,OOO for erecting a parish hall a; Gate Pa. FORESTERS INSTALLED WAIHI CEREMONY The half-yearly meeting of Court j Waihi, A.O.F. was held in the Forester’s Hall on Alonday evening, Bro. W. King presiding. There was a good attendance. Two new members were initiated into the order. The following officers were elected and installed for the ensuing term:—Chief Ranger. Bro. A. E. Waite; S. Bro. L. Henderson; S.W., Bro. T. Keyes; J.W., Bro. J. Walters; T. 8., Bro. C. Duhstan; J. 8., Bro. H. Farrell: , secretary, Bro. J. Wotherspoon; treasurer, Bro. W. Wotherspoon; minute secretary, Bro. G. E. Armour. The chairman of the Waihi Schools Committee has received a further letter from the Education Department relative to the committee’s request that the police reserve, adjoining the East School should be transferred to the Education Department for use as an additional playground. The Justice Department says it is unable to accede to the request. In the event of improvements being made to the area by the local committee no Government subsidy will be available on any money, expended. COMEDY AT PAPATOETOE LITERARY SOCIETY’S EFFORT A capacity house greeted the Papatoetoe Literary and Debating Society at the Town Hall, Papatoetoe, last evening when it staged three-act comedy, “Come Out of the Kitchen.’* Its efforts were deservedly well received. Alusical features were rendered by Alisses Ruby Wallace and Hogg, Alessrs. J. A. Sandford, A. F. Catt and J. AI. Deas, violin solo by Airs. Batchelor and musical prologU'E; by Miss B&tcnelor. WELLINGTON ROAD BOARD WATER SUPPLY ABANDONED As a result of the Local Bodies Loan Board adversely criticising the consulting engineers plans for the reticulation of the district with water from the Auckland city supply, at an estimated cost of £15,000, the Alount Wellington Road Board, decided at its meeting last evening, to abandon the scheme for the present. The City Council advised that it was unable to accede to the Board’s request for heavy licence fees to be apportioned on a population basis. The clerk was instructed to obtain legal advice. It was decided to be represented at the conference to be convened by the One Tree Hill Road Board, to object to the excessive hospital levy. During the discussion the clerk reported that the levy represented £1 for every man, woman and child in the town board district. When the accounts, which totalled £SOO 11s were passed for payment, the clerk reported that the credit balance in the bank totaled just on £2,000, in i addition to which there was £1,200 in | outstanding rates.

Harris, presiding ; The report stated that the show was held on February 11 at the ram fair on February 17. The entries and competitions were fewer last year, but were greater in the horticultural and weight-judging classes.
