PIONEERS’ MEMORIAL
TABLET UNVEILED WAR VETERAN HONOURED The unveiling took place in St. Matthias’s Church, at Panmure, on Sunday morning, of a brass tablet which has been dedicated to the memory of one of the oldest pioneers, and which provides an historical link with the past. It perpetuates the memory of the late Colonel Theodore M. Haultain and his wife, and the unveiling ceremony was performed by Archdeacon MacHurray. Born in 1817 at Sandhurst, the late Colonel Haultain had an eventful and active military career. Leaving England in 1834, he served for ten years in India, and came to New Zealand in the early ’fifties to take charge of a New Zealand force. He retired from the Imperial Army in 1856. In the Waikato War he commanded th© Second Waikato Regiment at the Battle of Orakau in 1869, and campaigned against Te K.ooti in 1572, subsequently becoming Minister of Defence. The late Colonel Haultain was closely associated with the Anglican Church and was a member of the first General Synod in 1857, singing the constitution of the New Zealand church in the same year. He was lay diocesan nominator for Auckland, and chairman of committee of the Diocesan Synod and Auckland College Council. He died at Parnell some years ago, but was in the Panmure district in the early pioneering days. The tablet erected in the church was brought from India, where he had seen considerable military service.
