NEWTON DOWNS ELLERSLIE

HARD, KEEN GAME Ellerslie was well supplied with League football on Saturday, and the games were well patronised by the general public. At one o’clock the local school team made its first appearance in the League code, and although defeated by Otahuhu (last year’s champions), it put up a good showing, and will improve with a game or two. At two o'clock the local lads met Akarana in the fourth grade competition. and although Akarana won fairly easily at the finish, a real good game was witnessed. By the time the senior game started the crowd had gathered in large numbers and although no charge was made at the gate a collection was taken up on the ground, and it was remarkable the number of people who witnessed the game from outside the grounds. Ellerslie won the toss and elected to play with the sun and wind at their backs, and when Dufty set the ball in motion, it was at once seen that both teams were determined to win if possible, and although the game was hard and keen, it was played in a good spirit and was devoid of any rough play. HEREWINI PLAYS WELL ISTewton was undoubtedly the best team on the day and should have won by more than they did, although it must be admitted the Ellerslie team was decidedly unlucky not to have scored once or twice. Herewini at fullback, for the winners, played an outstanding game, and made some wonderful saves at times. Of the threequarter lines Hardgraves was easily the best, and scored a couple of good tries. Dufty at centre was as solid as ever, but indulges in too much kicking. McLeod at five-eighth, played a fine game and is improving every game. Hales at half did his work well and gave his backs the ball cleanly. Somers seems to have taken a new lease of life and not only got the ball in the scrums, but was up with the play all day. Herring is striking his best form again and is a big assistance to the hooker. Hall and Henry also were in the hard work all the time. Perry, who made his first appearance
