COSTLEY TRUST BOARD CONTROLS LARGE SUM
EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE Commencing with the comparatively modest sum of £12,150, bequeathed by Mr. Edward Costley, the funds of the Costley Training Institution Trust Board have grown to £25,807. This gratifying increase in capital is due to careful investment and the cessation of expenditure on the Board’s Home in Richmond Road, which, on the advice of the Education Department, has been closed. The scope of the Costley Trust has been widened by recent legislation which enables the Trustees to help deserving cases which may be recommended to the Board, outside the Industrial Schools. This affords an opportunity to benefit those who have not come under the jurisdiction of the Education Department. The Trustees have worked in conjunction with the Child Welfare Branch of the Education Department which has in all cases been in full accord with the trustees and which has shown itself most sympathetic in all cases dealt with. The income for the year ended December 31st, 1927, totalled £1,606 2s 9d, the nett maintenance charges being £1,090 14s Id, which money was expended in the from of assistance to deserving boys and girls in getting a training for the duties of life according to the objects of the Trust adjusted to meet modern conditions. During the year 12 boys were maintained and 37 other children assisted. During the past four years 93 children had received assistance. In some cases the help needed is only slight, but in many cases, on account of poverty, substantial assistance is needed, and, in every case, the help given is a great factor in giving such young people the opportunity they could not otherwise have had.
