NOMINATED IMMIGRANTS
Sir, — Your correspondent, “Open Mind,” desires to know what becomes of the immigrants arriving here as nominated. In the first place the word “nominated” is being grossly abused by those desiring the admittance of their friends and relations from England. They are often not in a position financially to help them, and they are fully conversant of the impossibility of procuring work for them on arrival. Such men must eventually drift into the ranks of the unemployed, and become a charge on the charitable institutions of the city. A considerable number of the immigrants are burdened with many dependants, and the chances of their finding employment are slender. Where they have been specifically described as nominated, let it be made incumbent on their nominators to house and keep them during their period of unemployment. GEORGE MADDOCKS.
