OVER THE HILL

JUMPING AT ELLERSLIE TO-DAY’S TRAINING NOTES With candidates schooling: over the’ hill at Ellerslie this morning - , in addition to plenty of galloping on number ; three grass, which was conducive to 1 slow times, patrons of the track were j provided with an interesting programme. Princess Ronnie took the ; honours on the flat, while several jump- j ers gave splendid displays over country, j Royal Tea strode over half-a-mile, i recording 53 2-5 for the distance. There is nothing wrong with his condi- , tion at present. Prince Papa was restricted to an easy ! five furlongs, registering 1.12. Kang Emerald and Eager Rose were companions over five furlongs but were not put against the watch. The former had a shade the advantage at the finish. CORNWALL CANDIDATES Corinax was given an essay over a round on the sand, being accompanied by Piet over the first part of the journey and he was brought home by The • Thorn over the last half -mile, the time i for the last mile being 1.48 4-5. Corinax did it well and is evidently going to i be in great buckle when the Cornwall Handicap comes up for decision. Sir Archie (B. Deeley) and Lomint (Ackerstein) were partnered over six j furlongs in 1.20 4-5, the initial two j furlongs taking 25 3-5, and for three 39. The pair were on terms at the | conclusion of the gallop, but neither | was asked to do its best. Princess Ronnie, with a light-weight in the saddle, was given a task extend- | ing to six furlongs, and she recorded ! a pleasing effort in getting to the end of the journey in 1.19 3-5. The pace was on from the commencement, as may be gleaned from the fact that the first furlongs was covered in 12 1-5, two for 25, and the first three in 3S 2-5. BEAU CAVALiER SPRINTS There was very little separating Storm Fiend (C. Carmont), Beau Cavalier (E. Garrett) and Master Doon (J. Conquest). The trio finished up six furlongs in the order named. The first furlong was covered in 12 2-5, three in 38, and the complete journey in 1.20 4-5. Beau Cavalier was then given easy pace-work on the sand. Ballymoy 11., and Hyde Park were, practically on terms at the conclusion of an essay over five furlongs, which took 1.6 2-5, the initial two furlongs occupying 26 1-5. Modest Boy was allowed to go at an easy gallop over six furlongs in 1.24 4-5. Miss Myrtle and the juvenile, Lido, inoved nicely over half-a-mile in 53, while Karamu covered a round in 1.59. Mountain Guide secured a break on Judge’s Box and had an advantage of a length at the end of five furlongs in I.S 4-5. It was noticeable, however, that Judge’s Box was burdened with a big impost. The Fox travelled over half-a-mile in 55, but was under a strong pull at the finish. This three-year-old should not be long in leaving the maiden class. Blue Spear and Killute were in company in a bout over six furlongs, the time registered being 1.21 4-5. Both were going well at the end. The two-year-old Bulolo, was not pressed to run home from the three furlong post in 39. Lord Bruce traversed a round comfortably in 1.49 3-5, the last six furlongs taking 1.26. INTERESTING SCHOOLING When Glendowie (S. Henderson), Mashoor (C. Regan), Importer (J. Sharkey) and Pompeius (T. Chaplin) walked out to the track, a stir was created among the bystanders, for the quartet were to go in company in an essay over the full steeplechase course. All succeeded in negotiating the initial fence, the stone wall, and as they came over the double Mashoor had command. wTiile very little separated Importer and Glendowie, with Pompeius a couple of lengths further back. As they commenced to climb the hill, Mashoor was six lengths in front of Glendowie and Importer, who were together, while Pompeius was still bringing up the rear. The leader maintained his advantage when the stone wall at the foot of the hill was negotiated, and although Glendowie then commenced to draw nearer at the double the second time, Mashoor held command at the finish. None of the aspirants was responsible for a serious mistake, and the jumping was a decidedly pleasing exhibition. Glendowie was under a strong hold throughout the journey, and his display would certainly lose fiiim none of his admirers. Rafferty (C. Regan) and Wee Marble (E. Garrett) were responsible for a very satisfactory showing when the pair were associated with Kamehameha (S. Henderson), Clockwork (R. Olive) and Royal Trek (J. Sharkey) in an essay over the full steeplechase course. Rafferty set out early to be the leader, and was attended by Wee Marble, Kamehameha, Clockwork and Royal Trek, the last-named refusing at the water jump. Kamehameha baulked at the first fence on the hill, but subsequently jumped the fence and completed the course alone. Meanwhile Rafferty had led over the stonewall, and at this stage was challenged by Wee Marble, the pair finishing up the journey together, Clockwork being a few lengths back. Marita (J, Mephan) and Betty Zane H, JDulieu) were associated in a display over the steeplechase fences on the flat, both jumping well. the Hurdlers Scot Free (T. Chaplin) proved to be j much too good for Salamander (R. Olive), Pekatahi (McGregor) and Miss Alma (Healey), whom he beat by at least four lengths at the end of a task over four hurdles on the course proper. The quartet commenced from the seven furlong post and covered the journey in 1.48 3-5, Scot Free increasing his advantage at each fence. Salamander and Pekatahi gave no cause for complaint, but Miss Alma did not impress. Kyngzone (J. Sharkey) set out to make pace for Marble Mount (J. Mephan), Quincoma (R. Olive) and Kauri Park (H. Dulieu), this being the order over the second fence in a bout over the hurdles on the course proper. Kyngzone commenced to come back to his opponents after negotiating the third obstacle, and gave way to Quincoma and Marble Mount, this pair taking the concluding hurdle together and finishing on terms. Kyngzone was close.up, but Kauri Park, who was always in the , rear, was tailed off. The time recorded for the seven furlongs was 1.47. ARCH END’S BRISK DISPLAY There was not much between Archeno (E. Garrett) and Rahepoto (J. Sharkey) at the end of an essay over the hurdles on the course proper, the seven furlongs journey taking 1.45 —the best effort during the morning. The splendid fencing of the pair evoked admiration, and it would occasion no surprise to see Archeno win a hack hurdle race at the Ellerslie winter meeting. Spalmore (J. Sharkey) and Odin (T. Chaplin) were given a lesson over the schooling hurdles, but Spalmore failed to clear the second obstacle and fellheavily. Luckily Sharkey rolled clear

and received no injury. Odin completed his task over four of the fences, and nothing could be said against his exhibition. ARCHIBALD'S TASK Archibald (H. Dulieu) was trotted to the top of the straight and covered a round of the course proper, successfully negotiating five hurdles without mistake. A lesson for Fiery Lad (E. Garrett) and Glenetta (R. Olive) was spoiled by both competitors falling. Fiery Lad hit the second fence hard and fell heavily, his rider fortunately escaping injury. Glenetta continued on to complete th journey, and after scrambling over the third hurdle crashed into the remaining obstacle, her feet becoming -hooked up in the batten and having to be released from her predicament. Llewellyn (T. Chaplin) jumped two schooling hurdles in satisfactory style and was restricted to easy work on the grass.
