WAITEMATA’S ATTITUDE

REVIEW OF SYSTEM An increase of £1,057 in the levy made by the Hospital Board was reported to the Waitemata County Council yesterday by the clerk, Mr. C. Cawkwell, who said the levy for the current year was £5,112. The Hospital Board’s allocation of the contribution to be made by the council was based on ,3d in the £ on tho capital value, and the county's rate was .25d. An increase in the rate would not, however, be required this year, as a credit of £1,372 on tire hospital rate account for the year just ended could be absorbed. It would bo necessary to make an increase in 1929-30, as the hospital rate account would probably show a slight debit, with defaulters during the current year. In his annual report to the council, the chairman, Mr. 11. Hay, expressed the hope that the system of making hospital levies would be reviewed, to ease the burden on counties. Hospitals were used mostly by town dwellers, and the basis of the levy on counties seemed inequitable. The Ne\y Zealand Counties’ Conference had adopted a remit that levies on local bodies should be on a 50 per cent, population basis and 50 per cent, capital value basis.
