MINISTER WILL NOT APPOINT COMMISSION
hospital levy protest SYMPATHY BUT NO HELP (From Our Oicn Correspondent) WAIHI, Friday. The Waihi Borough Council’s re - quest for a commission to inquire into the cost of administering the affairs of the Waihi Hospital, on the ground that its levy was excessive, has been declined by the Minister of Health, the Hon. J. A. Young. In a letter received by the council on Thursday evening the Minister said tlmt, while admitting certain of the contentions of the council were correct he did not see that anything could be gained by appointing a commission, and pointed out that wh.en.the Hospitals Act of 1908 was before Parliament, pressure was brought to bear to have Waihi Borough constituted a hospital district. He sympathised with the borough council, but could suggest no other course but for them to pay the levy, and take advantage of the maximum assistance allowed by the Government. The council decided to receive the letter, and to forward a copy to the Waihi Hospital Board.
