HAMILTON AFFAIRS

Major-General R. Young. G.0.C., New Zealand forces was a guest at the annual meeting of the Waikato Returned Soldiers’ Association on Thursday. Mr. J. M. Baxter was re-elected president and Mr. R. F. Ward, vicepresident. The new committee consists of Messrs. R. D. McFarland, Cranwell, Jenkins, Green, Norris, N. E. Johnson, Toombs, Pile, Champion and Cliallinor. The balance sheet disclosed a deficit of £25, due, it was stated, to the small membership of 61. Following the meeting the annual “smoko” was held, there being an at-

tendance of 150 ex-service men. There was a lengthy toast list and entertaining stories were told by General Young, Colonel H. R. Potter and Bishop Clierrington. The gathering is considered the most successful of recent years. Valuable work among the inmates of the Waikeria Borstal Institution has been done by members of the Hamilton branch of the Howard League for Penal Reform, whose first annual meeting was held last evening. The committee has also been instrumental in assisting released prisoners to obtain work. The following officers were elected: Patron, Hon. J. A. Young; president, Mr. J. R. Fow; vice-presidents. Miss A. D. Bright and Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M.; Rev. P. Paris and Mr. S. C. G. Lye; chairman and hon. treasurer, Mr. F. A. de la Mare; hon. secretary, Mrs. Edith English: committee, Misses N. Valder, and Nicholls, Messrs. Jebsori, Kenah, Patterson and Mullins. A large increase in membership and a satisfactory financial position are the essential features of the year’s working of the Waikato Sub-Provincial branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, whose annual meeting was held yesterday.
